So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. (Job 2:7 ESV)

Do we get this? Satan inflicted Job with sores all over his body, and it was, to a lesser or greater degree, God’s command and will that he do so. Sometimes I wonder if God and Satan don’t still work in this way with us. We seem to overlook these things in application to ourselves, and yet there they are just waiting for us to pick them up, wrestle with them.

It is never a beautiful thing when the boils come.

And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from the kiln, and let Moses throw them in the air in the sight of Pharaoh. It shall become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and become boils breaking out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.” So they took soot from the kiln and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses threw it in the air, and it became boils breaking out in sores on man and beast. (Exodus 9:8-10 ESV)

Sometimes the boils come because we are faithful. God wants to prove to Satan that His power to persevere His saints is unstoppable. He wants to show Satan who really is Boss. But other times, the boils come because we are hindering a work that God wants done. We are keeping His people back from the liberation to be found in Christ.

These are the times when Moses comes and puts us in our place. He brings with him the divine command to lay the guilt on us. Sometimes the only way for us to find our own freedom is through the Moseses in our lives.

Raphael said to Tobias, before he had approached his father, “I know that his eyes will be opened. Smear the gall of the fish on his eyes; the medicine will make the white films shrink and peel off from his eyes, and your father will regain his sight and see the light.” (Tobit 11:7-8 NRSV)

Sometimes, when the boils come, they block our sight. Our vision becomes clouded and we must rely on someone else. If we will be faithful and call out to God, He will send us a Raphael; a messenger to give us our sight back so that we may see the light.

Don’t lose heart! If you are experiencing the boils, call out to God. If the boils have stolen your sight, ask for God to send His messengers and His divine healing.

He has shown his people the power of his works…
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy;
they are established forever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. (Psalm 111:6a, 7-8 ESV)
