Sometimes I wonder what is going through the heads of the current administration here in America. In the name of defending our borders, we send all of our troops into another country to fight a war against “terror,” which is an emotion. At the same time, and in the same breath, saying that to defend our borders we need to build a wall between us and Mexico and, in that breath, saying that we need to grant amnesty to all of the people who are already within our borders.
And while all of this is going on, a crazy dictator in North Korea tests a nuclear bomb. We pressure him to stop, and he says that if we don’t stop pressuring him, he sees no other option but war and that he views any resolution against his country that the UN passes as a declaration of war. He says these things, and we send the Secretary of State to a bunch of countries trying to gain support for a resolution against North Korea. We say that they are in violation of the non-proliferation treaty while we simultaneously initiate “a ‘Complex 2030’ program to develop and deploy 2,200 new nuclear weapons.“
Think about something with me for a moment. The majority of our military is indefinitely in a country run by extremist Muslims bent on destroying all things Western (read: American). Our borders are porous at best and, statistically speaking, more non-Mexicans come through the Mexican border than do actual Mexicans, some of these actually being themselves terrorists. North Korea now has a nuclear bomb, or at least the capability to make one, and has actually threatened us with attack. And, lest I forget, they also may have the capability to launch long-range missiles from North Korea into the United States. Imagine what damage even a few small nukes stuck on some long-range missiles could do.
Our leadership’s response: refusal to set time tables for removal of troops from Iraq (and calling anyone who asks about this a coward and accusing them of a cut-and-run policy), a desire to grant amnesty as quickly as possible to all of those “illegals” within our borders already, and preassuring a nation that has threatened war in the very way that they have told us is viewed as a declaration of war.
We are flirting with disaster.
What if North Korea gets fed up and decides to attack us within our borders? Say they do have the capability and they launch a couple of small nukes at strategically chosen locations around the nation. If they launch enough, can our missile defense system really protect us?
What if, as this is happening, a few terroist sleeper-cells wake up and execute a few of their own strategic attacks. If enough of them wake up and do it, can we really expect to catch them all?
And while all this is happening here, our troops are stranded in Iraq. Because of all of the stuff happening within the borders, they are unable to get here safely to defend us.
That, of course, is a worst-case scenario. I don’t foresee all of those things happening simultaneously. But I do think we have ourselves in a very tight spot. If just one of those things happens on any significant scale, we’re screwed.
Even greater than all of this, though, is Iran’s threat of nuclear attack. Iran is a nation that would not be afraid to use a bomb when they get it. They may even test the bomb on our own troops. Now the plot thickens.
Our nation’s borders are being invaded by terrorists, our troops are trapped in a war against an ideology, and North Korea and Iran are flexing nuclear muscles at us and threatening war.
Stepping back from all of this and looking within our nation’s borders, and we see even more looming disaster.
Our president who claimed to be pro-life has done zilch to live up to this supposed stance. In fact, he has done more for the pro-choice movement than anything. Putting aside the debate over whether abortion is right or wrong (and whether your personal beliefs have been defended by him), we must admit that he lied to us on this issue.
Our president, who claimed that he was for the traditional family, has done nothing to really prove this. Yeah, it may not be legal for gays to get “married,” but has he done anything to stop domestic violence or divorce for any reason? The traditional family has really not been defended by this supposed pro-traditional family president.
And all the while, anyone watching the news or American television can see the decline in moral integrity in this great nation. We’ll cover for politicians doing inappropriate things with naked boys and snicker at Wesley Snipes for evading the IRS but at the same time tell the whole world how young girls in school shootings were molested, and even put their names and faces on TV for all to see, marring their reputation until the day they die.
And church culture is no different. Keep the Sabbath holy? “What the hell is ‘Sabbath’?” we ask. “I don’t need the church to be a Christian. I don’t need to set a day apart for the worship of God.”
God once told Israel,
If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely. I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful beasts from the land, and the sword shall not go through your land. You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. I will turn to you and make you fruitful and multiply you and will confirm my covenant with you. You shall eat old store long kept, and you shall clear out the old to make way for the new. I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.
But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when none pursues you. And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again sevenfold for your sins, and I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. (Leviticus 26:3-19 ESV)
And that is only part of what God promises to do to His people if they will not remain obedient to His Law.
God was speaking to a nation in that passage, and, I believe, He still speaks to nations today. Slowly but surely you see God’s promise of wrath coming to fruition right here in America. The pride of our power is being broken. It is being shown to us that we are not in control of everything. We are being shown that there are other nations out there who have power as well.
Nehemiah gives us a very interesting account of something the Israelites did.
And the Israelites separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day; for another quarter of it they made confession and worshiped the LORD their God. (Nehemiah 9:2-3 ESV)
The people of Israel confessed their own sins and the sins of their fathers. And later in that same chapter, they also confess the sins of their leaders.
To quote Darris McNeely,
[America has]…had [her] time in the sun and will…experience serious decline unless a national repentance occurs. God will break the pride of U.S. …power, in all its forms, and the result will usher in a major shift in global power and politics.
It is fashionable in many parts of the world today to hate America…[T]hat hatred is sometimes justified because of the corrupt values and morals exported through its media. Yet, for all its sins, America has been a powerful force in the world, much of it for good. When it no longer holds the dominant economic, political and military power, things will change, and it will not be all good.
I guess it is up to us, more or less. Will we repent as a nation of our sins, like Ninevah? Or, will we continue in our iniquity and face the wrath of an almighty God?
